On June 19th 1865 General Granger read the below order to the enslaved people of Texas, informing them they were officially emancipated from slavery. Once learning of their freedom many formerly enslaved people experienced confusion and fear for their future but the freedmen in Texas erupted in celebration! This celebration would continue for centuries and become one of the longest running freedom celebrations in the United States known as Juneteenth! Today we celebrate the day all slaves knew of their freedom from slavery.
